Brooklyn’s reputation for producing elite point guards remains untarnished — Deron Rippey Jr. just ensured the borough got another national headline.
The 6-foot-2 playmaker from Fort Greene, Brooklyn, went public on CBS Sports HQ with his decision to play for Duke University, selecting the Blue Devils over NC State, Miami, Texas, and Tennessee.
His recruitment was a nationwide sweepstakes, featuring more than 30 major offers. Rippey now graduates as the consensus No. 1 point guard in the 2026 class — praised as a five-star leader with that classic Brooklyn basketball swagger.
Brooklyn Grit, Blair Academy Skill, and Now Duke
Rippey, though raised in Brooklyn, currently attends Blair Academy in Blairstown, New Jersey. The nationally regarded prep school is famous for developing standout talent.
That combination of city toughness and high-level prep training has produced a guard reminiscent of the archetypes New York hoops fans adore: bold, creative, vocal, and never intimidated. Rippey fits seamlessly and is poised for a starring role at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
“The Brotherhood Called My Name.”
Rippey left no doubt about his intentions at Duke.
He told CBS: “I picked Duke because I want the highest level competition… Competing for championships and contributing right away are what matter to me.”
He also sent a clear message: “Cameron Crazies — get ready for a winner, a competitor, and a leader when I arrive.”
Why Rippey Is a Must-Get for Duke
Although not the tallest recruit at 6’2, Rippey’s skills far outweigh his stature.
Scouts repeatedly emphasize his quickness, energy, and relentless defensive work. He disrupts offenses, drives tempo, and brings a contagious spark — traits that scream Brooklyn basketball.
Head coach Jon Scheyer sees Rippey anchoring the 2026 recruiting class and leading the Blue Devils’ backcourt.
Duke’s Next Point Guard Star
Rippey will lead a remarkable recruiting class, featuring Maxime Meyer, Cameron Williams, and Bryson Howard.
With his top-15 ranking and status as the nation’s No. 1 point guard, Rippey gives Duke a seasoned game-controller to partner with premier talent across the floor.
Brooklyn Guards Set the Standard
This is a proud moment for Brooklyn. Rippey’s commitment is more than a signing — it’s proof that the borough keeps producing game-changing floor generals.
As the sport trends toward versatility and length, point guards with vision, leadership, and Brooklyn DNA are still in demand. From Fort Greene, to Blair Academy, to Duke, Deron Rippey Jr. continues the tradition under the biggest lights.
