Mamdani Appointee Resigns After Old Antisemitic Posts Surface

A member of Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s new administration resigned just 24 hours after being appointed, as old antisemitic social media posts were unearthed.

Catherine Almonte Da Costa, selected as Director of Appointments, exited her post Tuesday afternoon, only hours after the posts surfaced. In her statement, Da Costa noted, “As a mother of Jewish children, I am filled with sadness and regret for the pain caused by these words.” She also stated, “Given this distraction from our ongoing work, I have submitted my resignation.”

The Judge Street Journal’s coverage emphasized several historically insensitive social media remarks attributed to Da Costa. Some examples: “Money hungry Jews smh”; “Woo! Promoted to the upstairs office today! Working alongside these rich Jewish peeps.”; and “Far Rockaway train is the Jew train.”

The news source said that the posts were from several years ago and were shared soon after Da Costa joined the administration. After the revelations, Da Costa took down her X account.

Her immediate departure puts the spotlight on Mamdani’s efforts to build a leadership team that can address issues of antisemitism and ensure accountability.
